The Dangers of Gamer Entitlement

Why BioWare’s Jennifer Hepler suffered a vicious verbal attack at the hands of gamers this week.

This week, a small subset of the gaming community humiliated, defiled, and verbally attacked a female BioWare employee for the suggestion that video games should place more importance on narrative.

The attack on Jennifer Hepler, which continues with a consistent, unrelenting, and deep-set conviction not unlike religious fervor, points to an escalating manifestation of gamer entitlement, the idea that gamers have the right to do and say without suffering the consequences of their actions.

i feel like this is important to pass on considering the recent attacks against women who voiced objections over the treatment of women in comics and received similar bashing on the net.

As a woman who works in and loves working in the Video Game industry, I think I love Bioware even more now for standing up for their employee even if it upset “fans”.  I say “fans” because I get the feeling that about 75% of the people harassing her are in reality twelve year olds who think it’s fun to troll people for whatever reason and don’t care about bioware, mass effect or video games at all.
