The United Colors of the Maya. Each village in Guatemala has its own set of colors and patterns that show up in the huipiles worn by all the women of that village. At a glance they can identify whether someone is from their village or one nearby. So markets tend to be a rather colorful affair.

The culture is evolving, no doubt, as was evident on Sunday in the old colonial town - locals were out in families, with mothers wearing traditional huipiles (embroidered blouses - and every village weaves its own unique version), while their daughters, also dressed in huipiles, had added a pair of heels - or a glitzy modern watch and hair clips for effect - and were texting on their cellphones like teenagers in any other part of the world.

Even I was tempted into buying a huipile by a rather resourceful Mayan saleswoman! Now if only I could find someone in Boston who could stitch it up into a stylish blouse for me!
