    The Devonian period (418–354 million years ago) saw an evolutionary radiation that could be called the “Age of Fish.” Armored fish called placoderms dominated Devonian seas, some reaching lengths of six meters. One of the most famous genera of placoderms is Dunkleosteus. Ray-finned fish, sharks, and lobe-finned fish also appeared at this time and have survived to the present day, although marine lobe-finned fish are known only from the coelacanth.
