I think the lack of women in the industry is also why you get so many weird female stereotypes coming out of the games. The guys are working in a vacuum and really don’t realize that what they’re doing is sketchy.
Oh for sure. I’m sure a bunch of those guys come up with stuff they think is really really great at those friday-night pub runs, or locked up in the conference room for a brainstorming session, and then one or two years later their preshus babbu debuts, and then who are the game reviewers? IGN, Kotaku, Game Informer, etc. They’re also relatively inbred as far as industries go, and they don’t often pick up on this stuff either. The feminist commentary doesn’t see nearly as much fanfare when it comes out.
I know a guy that does console games (and he does them in a Big Way) and from the relatively few casual conversations I’ve had with him I can tell that that is his frame of reference and that it wouldn’t occur to him that maybe things are all that bad. It’s frustrating.
